The basics
How transcripts work in Nigeria
Official copies go school to school
Nigerian universities send official transcripts straight to the receiving school, employer or evaluator. A copy sent to you is marked "student copy".
Start early
Some schools send within days, others take weeks, and many publish no timeline. Apply at least a month before any deadline.

Transcript, statement of result or certificate?
Transcript
Your full academic record: every course, its units and grade, semester by semester, and your final CGPA. Official copies are sealed or sent electronically by the university straight to the receiver.
For further study, WES and other evaluators, some employers
Statement of result
A one-page letter confirming you graduated, your degree and your class. It is usually issued to you, not to a receiver, and is often what you use until the certificate is ready.
For NYSC, jobs and further study while you wait for your certificate
Certificate and verification
The degree certificate itself. Many receivers ask the university to confirm it is genuine. This is a separate verification request, often started by the receiver, and it usually has its own fee.
For employers, embassies and professional bodies
Questions graduates ask
Usually not. Official transcripts go straight from the university to the receiving school, employer or evaluator. Some schools issue a copy to you marked "student copy", which most receivers will not accept as official.
One for each receiver. Each school, employer or evaluator normally needs its own copy sent directly to it, and each copy is usually a separate request and fee.
Most transcript portals are online, so you can apply from anywhere, including abroad. If a school needs an in-person visit, ask the office whether a relative can go with a letter of authority and a copy of your ID.
Transcripts are issued in the name in the school records. If the receiver needs to match a new name, keep your marriage certificate or a sworn affidavit ready, and ask the school what it accepts before you pay.
At least a month before any deadline, and earlier if the school publishes no processing time. Delays are common, especially around admission and immigration seasons.
Have these ready before you apply
- ✓Your full name exactly as it appears in the school records
- ✓Matric number, department, faculty and year of graduation
- ✓Scanned statement of result or certificate, in case the portal asks for it
- ✓The receiver's official email or postal address, copied from their website
- ✓Any reference number the receiver gave you, such as a WES reference
- ✓A working email and phone number to get updates
