Navigating Campus Life: Resources and Facilities at DELSU

Campus life at Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka is filled with diverse operational requirements that extend beyond regular lecture rooms. From securing affordable accommodation in school hostels to completing SIWES placements and physical clearances, undergraduates must interact with multiple university divisions. Having a clear guide to these campus resources is essential to prevent delays and manage academic costs.

Abraka is a relatively high-cost student town. Off-campus rent ranges from N80,000 to N250,000 per session depending on the accommodation standard and proximity to the campus gates. To reduce living costs, the university manages secure, affordable school hostels on the Abraka main campus (such as the Ethiope hostel, NDDC hostel, and medical students hostels). Hostels offer subsidized rates, but allocation is highly competitive, prioritizing fresh students and final year students.

1. DELSU Hostel Application & Allocation Procedures

To secure a space in the university hostels, students must apply online via the portal immediately after confirming their school fees payments. The allocation engine operates a lottery system due to high demand. Once allocated, students must complete physical screenings at the hostel registry and present:

  • Their printed hostel allocation slip.
  • Their current session school fees receipt.
  • A copy of their student ID card or admission letter.
  • Four passport photographs for file logs.

2. SIWES and Industrial Training (IT) Management

For students in technical, science, and vocational programs, the Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) is a compulsory, credit-carrying academic requirement. Typically executed in Year 3 or Year 4, SIWES bridges academic theory with industry practice.

DELSU SIWES students must register with the university SIWES directorate at the Abraka main campus to obtain their official logbooks, ITF forms, and placement letters. Finding a relevant placement within Delta State or across Nigeria is crucial, as students must submit weekly logbook logs signed by their industry supervisors, followed by a formal presentation to departmental panels upon return.

3. Physical Clearances and Identity Cards

At the beginning of your academic career (Freshers Clearance) and at the end of your studies (Graduation Clearance), you must compile a physical clearance dossier. This file is physically verified by departmental and faculty committees. Key files include WAEC/NECO certificates, birth certificates, local government identifications, and clinic cards.

All registered students must also generate their official DELSU Student Identity Card. ID card registration is completed on the portal, requiring digital passport uploads. The physical card is issued by the security department and is required to access examination halls, library study spots, and university health services.
