Complete Admissions Guide for Delta State University (DELSU)

Securing undergraduate admission into Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka requires a solid understanding of the university registrar's screening policies. Delta State University operates a highly competitive admissions system based on a combinations of academic merit, Local Government Area (LGA) catchment policies, and Educationally Less Developed States (ELDS) adjustments. Knowing how these components operate is crucial for every candidate seeking admission.

To participate in the screening process, candidates must select DELSU as their first choice in the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) UTME. The baseline cutoff mark generally ranges between 150 and 180, though highly high-demand courses such as Medicine and Surgery, Nursing Science, Pharmacy, and Law require significantly higher baseline UTME scores (often 200+) to be eligible for Post-UTME registration.

1. Understanding the DELSU Aggregate System

Unlike some Nigerian universities that compute O'level grades into their screening averages, DELSU uses a strict 50:50 formula based solely on your JAMB UTME score and your Post-UTME screening exam score. The calculation is done as follows:

  • Your JAMB score is divided by 8 (max 50 points).
  • Your Post-UTME score is divided by 2 (max 50 points).
  • The sum of these two provides your official screening aggregate percentage (max 100%).

For example, if you score 260 in JAMB and 68 in the Post-UTME screening, your aggregate is computed as (260 / 8) + (68 / 2) = 32.5 + 34 = 66.50%. This aggregate score is then compared against the departmental cutoff marks determined for that session to decide your placement.

2. Catchment Areas and Local Government Quotas

As a state-owned university, DELSU enforces a multi-tier admission list structure. The merit list is open to all candidates regardless of their state of origin, and it carries the highest cutoff mark. The catchment list is reserved for candidates who originate from Delta State local government areas (such as Ethiope East, Ndokwa, Aniocha, etc.). Catchment cutoff scores are usually 2% to 5% lower than the open merit list scores, offering a buffer for state indigenes.

Candidates from Educationally Less Developed States (ELDS) also receive adjusted score allowances to encourage educational diversity. When registering on the portal, ensuring you upload your official Local Government Certificate of Origin signed by your LGA liaison officer is essential to claim these catchment allocations.

3. The Supplementary list & Shopping Lists

If your aggregate falls slightly short of the cutoff mark for your first-choice course, DELSU regularly releases a "Shopping List" (Change of Course form) on the portal. This form allows candidates who met the baseline exam standards to apply for transfer into other less competitive departments that have remaining admission quotas. For instance, a candidate who missed the cutoff for Medicine might change their course to Anatomy, Physiology, or Biochemistry to secure placement.

Once your name is published on the admission list, you must log in to your JAMB Central Admission Processing System (CAPS) portal to "Accept" the offer. Failing to accept the admission on JAMB CAPS within the university's specified deadline will lead to the offer being voided and transferred to other candidates.
