Official Academic Standards at Delta State University
Succeeding academically at Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka requires a strict commitment to academic planning, portal registration schedules, and grading system regulations. The university operates on a standard semester system, comprising the Harmattan (first) semester and the Rain (second) semester. Maintaining a strong Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) requires students to understand how course credit loads impact their academic standing.
Course registration is the first critical step of every semester. DELSU students must register for their courses online via the official portal (portal.delsu.edu.ng) and obtain physical endorsements from their departmental course advisers. Full-time students are legally allowed to register for a minimum of 15 credit units and a maximum of 24 credit units per semester. Underloading (registering below 15 units) or overloading (registering above 24 units without senate approval) will invalidate your course forms during physical clearances.
1. Navigating the DELSU 5.0 Grading System
Delta State University operates on a standard 5.0 grade point average (GPA) scale. Your final grade in each course is computed from your Continuous Assessment (CA) score (out of 30%) and your final Examination score (out of 70%). The grades are classified as follows:
- Grade A (70% and above): 5 Grade Points per credit unit.
- Grade B (60% - 69%): 4 Grade Points per credit unit.
- Grade C (50% - 59%): 3 Grade Points per credit unit.
- Grade D (45% - 49%): 2 Grade Points per credit unit.
- Grade E (40% - 44%): 1 Grade Point per credit unit.
- Grade F (below 40%): 0 Grade Points (Failing grade).
Your semester GPA is calculated by multiplying the credit units of each course by the grade point earned, summing these quality points, and dividing by the total registered credit units. A single 'F' grade dramatically lowers your CGPA because the course units are still added to the divisor while adding zero points to the quality sum.
2. Academic Standing & Probation Guidelines
Students must maintain a Cumulative GPA (CGPA) of at least 1.50 at the end of each academic session (reconciled after the Rain semester) to stay in Good Academic Standing.
If a student's CGPA falls below 1.50, they will be placed on official Academic Probation for the subsequent session. During probation, the student is restricted from registering for maximum credit loads, allowing them to focus on retaking failed courses to boost their CGPA. If the CGPA remains below 1.50 for two consecutive sessions, the student faces withdrawal from their department or university.
3. Class of Degree Boundaries
At graduation, your final honors classification is determined by your cumulative GPA across all semesters:
- First Class Honors: CGPA of 4.50 - 5.00.
- Second Class Honors (Upper Division): CGPA of 3.50 - 4.49.
- Second Class Honors (Lower Division): CGPA of 2.40 - 3.49.
- Third Class Honors: CGPA of 1.50 - 2.39.
Using our online GPA calculators and Target Planners allows you to predict your graduation honors class and implement recovery strategies for carry-over courses early in the session.
